Description
Train to Pakistan is a historical novel written by Indian author Khushwant Singh. It was published in 1956 and is set in the partition of India in 1947. The novel follows the lives of various characters in the fictional village of Mano Majra, located on the border between India and Pakistan.
The book explores themes of love, loss, and violence during the partition, as well as the effects of religion on people’s lives. The main character, Hukum Chand, is a moneylender who becomes embroiled in the communal tensions between the Hindu and Sikh communities in the village. The novel also follows the story of Iqbal Singh, a young Sikh man who falls in love with a Muslim girl, and the conflict this causes in his community.
Train to Pakistan is widely regarded as a classic novel of the partition, and has been translated into several languages. It was adapted into a film in 1998, starring Nirmal Pandey and Rajit Kapur.
